RSU Nursing PartnerTrip

Registration is closed for this event
Rogers State University nursing students have the opportunity to learn about the realities of health care in several Nicaraguan communities and sharpen their skills alongside Nicaraguan health care professionals.

What Will We Do?

Our primary activity will be learning the realities of what health care looks like in several settings in Nicaragua. Half of our time will be centered in the coastal farming community of Chacraseca, with the other half in the mountain coffee-picking community of La Flor. We’ll visit a variety of health care settings including two days in community clinics, one day in a facility for disabled and disadvantaged children, and universities. We'll talk with Nicaraguan nurses and nursing students, and work and learn with doctors, nurses, midwives, and communal health brigades. We will also explore Nicaraguan culture, experience daily life, and of course, there will be some time for sightseeing!

Spanish language skills are not necessary. Participants should be in good health and must be pre-approved by the trip organizer.

Where Will We Stay?

We will sleep in dorm-style housing constructed for visiting groups and in modest hotels. We will also have an opportunity to spend one night with families. We will eat “tipico” Nicaraguan food (mostly rice and beans) prepared by the communities, and travel by vans and busses. We’ll be traveling light; participants are limited to one carry-on suitcase per person for the trip. It’s a chance to see what we can do without!

What Will It Cost?

The cost will be $950 PLUS airfare (estimated at around $800) to Managua, Nicaragua. This covers lodging, meals, in-country transportation, translator expenses, and trip coordination and leadership. The only personal costs will be meals en route to and from Nicaragua, souvenirs, and any unscheduled activities/meals the team decides to add. We have limited space for this adventure.

Travel Arrangements

JustHope will be booking flight itineraries, so it is vital that participants pre-pay their airfare before flights can be booked. A few months before the trip, when prices seem to be the most favorable, the cost will be determined and that amount will need to be paid at that time, which may be earlier than than March 30 deadline. Airfare will probably cost around $800, but may be more or less.

Deadlines

March 20: Online registration, $200 deposit due.
March 30: Airfare due.
April 20: The balance of the trip fee and paperwork is due.
