Educators in Solidarity 2016

Registration is closed for this event
Educators from the U.S. will develop relationships with Nicaraguan educators, and work in partnership with the Ministry of Education in teacher training.

What Will We Do?

Our primary activity will be developing relationships with our global neighbors–learning about their culture; experiencing daily life with them hearing their struggles, hopes, and dreams, and sharing ours. We will also spend time working in partnership with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education using Nicaraguan curriculum to train teachers in pedagogical techniques that require a minimum of materials. And there may be other possibilities for participating within the community. Whatever we do, we will do it side-by-side with our Nicaraguan partners while we learn about one another’s lives. And, of course, there will be some time for sightseeing!

Spanish language skills are not necessary. Participants should be in good health and must be pre-approved by the trip organizer.

Where Will We Stay?

We may spend one night in the capital city of Managua, and the rest of the week living in the Peace House in Chacraseca – a retreat center built for work groups and global partners. Living arrangements will be very modest, and may include using latrines during the workday. We will eat “tipico” Nicaraguan food prepared by the community – (JustHope has trained the cooks in water and food safety for North American visitors) – and we will always have bottled water available for drinking. We’ll be limiting personal luggage to to one carry-on suitcase per person for the trip—it’s a chance to see what we can do without!

What Will It Cost?

The cost is $800 per person plus airfare to Managua, Nicaragua. This covers lodging, meals, in-country transportation, translator expenses, and trip coordination and leadership. The only personal costs will be your meals en route and on the last night, plus souvenirs, and any tourist activities the team decides to add. (The Trip Fee assumes eight participants. If there are fewer than eight, the trip fee will need to increase to cover costs.)

Travel Information

Participants make their own travel arrangements and must arrive in Managua, Nicaragua, by 3 pm on Saturday, June 4.
