To Register

Your dates are not officially confirmed from our side until we have received:

• Your on-line registration.
• A $200 non-refundable deposit. This deposit is separate from the one you have already paid to DOCARE. Please send your check to JustHope at PO Box 4542, Tulsa, OK 74159.
• Your air itinerary. Details are in the Rotation Guidebook. Please report it here.
• A copy of the photo page of your passport. (Black and white is fine.) Upload it here.

After we receive these items, we will send you an invoice detailing the remaining costs payable to JustHope. For a four-week rotation the total cost is usually around $800-900, and covers room, board, and interpreter. Any balance is due 60 days in advance of your arrival.

After You Are Registered

• Please be sure to read the Guidebook to help you prepare.
• We will need you to complete this insurance information form. We require proof of medical evacuation insurance coverage for your time in Nicaragua. This is beyond typical medical insurance and does not carry a high cost. Your school may carry this, but if you need to purchase it, you can compare plans at SquareMouth.com.
• Travel and Arrival Information - Important information regarding travel, immigration, where to meet, and emergency contacts. Print two copies of this document - one to take with you and one to leave with your loved ones.
• The Frequently Asked Questions for our group trips will also be helpful, though not everything is relevant to rotations. A lot of it is great, though, especially the packing list.
• Some students have found it helpful to use an off-line GPS app on their phone to navigate around Nicaragua. One option is Maps.me. Just make sure you have your mobile settings off when you use your phone or you may incur huge roaming charges even without making any calls.

Information that JustHope Needs from Participants

Participants must complete the following and return them to JustHope no later than 60 days before their scheduled trip. Without this completed paperwork, participants cannot attend the trip. Participants who do not have their information in by the deadline may incur a $50 late fee.

Trip Registration

If you have not already registered, find your trip here, click on it and follow the instructions to register online. You will be required to register a username and password, which will allos you to update your information later and check/pay your account online.

Insurance Information

After registration, you'll need to complete this form providing your insurance information, including the required proof of evacuation insurance. Medical evacuation insurance has very reasonable costs and protects you against potentially tens of thousands of dollars should you need evacuation. If you are traveling as part of a school-sponsored study-abroad trip or a medical rotation, your institution may carry evacuation coverage for you. Be sure not to include "trip cancellation insurance" (unless you want that) which is not required and raises the costs considerably.

Passports

A copy of your passport (just the page that shows your photo and information). Upload a scan/photo of it here. Your passport must be valid (unexpired) for the duration of your trip.

Trip Fee Payment

If you have not completed your trip fee payment, please send your payment, noting which trip you are on (name or dates) and who the payment is for (if your name is not on the payment account). Payments can be made online or by mailing your check to JustHope, PO Box 4542, Tulsa, OK 74159. If you are not sure how much your trip fee is or how much you have already paid, you can print an invoice from your dashboard. You can solicit sponsors for your trip by creating your own sponsorship page, or if someone other than yourself will be making an online payment on your behalf, they should use this page.

Flight Information

You will need to let us know your flight information using this online form.

Physician Credentialing

Attending doctors (MD, DO, PharmD, etc.) and PAs (not DNPs, CNPs or RNs) on medical teams will need to provide notarized credentials no later than two months before the trip in order to be considered "practicing" in Nicaragua. See more information.

Though not required by JustHope, we encourage participants to register with the U.S. Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. When doing this, you'll need to have an address in Nicaragua. Use one of the following:

Tropical Disease Information

We encourage you to read the Center for Disease Control's latest travel information about Nicaragua. If you are traveling to any other countries before you arrive in Nicaragua, be extra sure to check vaccination requirements for all countries and carry any needed certificates of vaccination.

As of 29 January 2016, there have been a few reported infections of the mosquito-borne virus Zika in Nicaragua, including in León, near to JustHope's partner community of Chacraseca. Women who might be pregnant and partners of pregnant women should consider the risks carefully. The article Keep Calm and Travel On: Why Most Travelers Shouldn't Let The Zika Virus Derail Their Travel Plans offers some good perspective on this rapidly spreading virus.

Regardless of the risk of Zika virus, chikungunya and dengue fevers are an ever-present concern so use of DEET mosquito repellent and other mosquito bite prevention strategies are important and highly effective safety precautions. (Malaria is not endemic to our partner communities.) There is no need to avoid travel to Nicaragua, but there is a need to be informed and prepared.

JustHope's experience has been that no PartnerTrip participants have contracted chikungunya, dengue, malaria, or Zika, which we attribute to diligent use of DEET mosquito repellent and other prevention strategies (long sleeves/pants, netting, etc.).

Regarding DEET mosquito repellent, we do not recommend 100% DEET, as that is such a high concentration that it is easily over-applied to no greater benefit. Repellents with under 50% DEET are ideal. More information about DEET itself is available from the CDC.
