Tulsa Community College students share their skills and learn about Nicaraguan music and art.

Activities

Our primary activity will be developing our relationship with our global neighbors: learning about their culture; experiencing daily life with them; and hearing their struggles, hopes, and dreams. We will take part in making music with the children and teachers in an annual weeklong music camp. Through singing, flute, guitar, and marimba, we’ll experience and learn about traditional Nicaraguan folk music. We may also choose to participate in constructing a house for a family in need. And, of course, there will be a trip to the beach and other sightseeing!

Participants should be in good health, able to walk at least ¼ mile, and must be pre-approved by the trip organizer.

Accommodations

We will stay in Chacraseca at the Peace House – a dormitory built by the community for visiting groups. Living arrangements will be very modest, and we will eat tipico Nicaraguan food (mostly rice and beans) prepared by the community. We will have running water (a rarity in rural Nicaragua) with indoor bathrooms and showers!

Travelers will be limited to one carry-on suitcase per person for the trip — it’s a chance to see what we can do without!

Costs

The cost will be $975 plus airfare (approx $825) from Tulsa to Managua, Nicaragua, payable in four installments (see below). This covers lodging, meals, in country transportation, interpreter expenses, and trip coordination and leadership. The only personal costs will be $10 visa to enter the country, meals en route to and from Nicaragua, souvenirs, and any unscheduled activities the team decides to add. The cost does not include TCC tuition charges.

Travel Arrangements

JustHope will book tickets for all participants. The cost of the airfare must be already paid to the participant's account before their ticket can be booked.

Deadlines

ASAP: Aquire a US Passport valid through the duration of your trip.
January 15: Online registration and deposit of $250 due.
February 15: Second installent of $500 due.
March 15: Thirday installment of $500 due.
April 15: Final payment, passport copy, flight itinerary, evacuation insurance, and any other outstanding information are all due. See this page for more information. The final payment will probably be a bit more or less than $550 depending on the cost of airline tickets; only the actual cost of the tickets is passed on.
