Nursing Students from Tulsa Community College will learn about the realities of health care in several Nicaraguan communities.

Activities

Our primary activity will be learning the realities of what health care looks like in two different settings in Nicaragua:  (1) the coastal farming Department (State) of León, and (2) the mountain coffee-picking Department (State) of Matagalpa.  We’ll visit a variety of health care settings including hospitals, nursing home, orphanage, university classrooms, rural clinics, and home health visits; and work and learn with doctors, nurses, and communal health brigades. We will also explore Nicaraguan culture; experience daily life; and of course, there will be some time for sightseeing!

Participants should be in good health, able to walk at least ¼ mile, and must be pre-approved by the trip organizer.

Accommodations

We will sleep in dorm-style housing constructed for visiting groups. We will also spend one night with families. We will eat “tipico” Nicaraguan food (mostly rice and beans) prepared by the communities, and travel by vans/bus.

Travelers will be limited to one carry-on suitcase per person for the trip — it’s a chance to see what we can do without!

Costs

The cost will be $950 plus airfare (approx $700) from Tulsa to Managua, Nicaragua. This covers lodging, meals, in country transportation, interpreter expenses, and trip coordination and leadership. The only personal costs will be $10 visa to enter the country, meals en route to and from Nicaragua, souvenirs, and any unscheduled activities the team decides to add. The cost does not include TCC tuition charges. This adventure is limited to only 8 students! A $200 non-refundable deposit is due with your registration.

Travel Arrangements

JustHope will book tickets for all participants. In order to do so at the best possible rates, payment for airfare may be requested as soon as four months before the trip. To avoid a last minute rush to collect airfare, participants may advance $800 to JustHope towards airfare and the cost of the trip fee at at registration or any time.

Deadlines

March 16: Online registration, $200 deposit, and airfare due. Airfare may be requested earlier in order to secure the best rates.
April 12: Final payment, passport copy, JustHope paperwork are due. See this page for more information.
