Activities
Our primary activity will be to grow our relationship with our global neighbors - learning about their culture; experiencing daily life with them; and hearing their struggles, hopes, and dreams. We will also engage with them in working to realize some of their dreams, including the building of green stoves to help improve the desperately inadequate health situations in which many of them live. Some possibilities for other activities: participate in a story exchange with local women, cooking together, repair buildings/infrastructure, visit micro-businesses and farms, art projects with children, and much more! And, of course, there will be time for a bit of sightseeing!
Participants should be in good health, able to walk at least ¼ mile and climb steep, rocky terrain, and must be pre-approved by the trip organizer.
Accommodations
We will spend one night in the capital city of Managua, and the rest of the week in La Flor. Living arrangements will be very modest. We will sleep in the community center in La Flor and use outside showers and latrines. We will eat tipico Nicaraguan food (mostly rice and beans) prepared by the community. Electricity may be limited and sporadic, but we will have running water (a rarity in rural Nicaragua).
We’ll be gathering material supplies to donate to the community, so travelers will be limited to one carryon suitcase per person for the trip — it’s a chance to see what we can do without!
Costs
The cost is $825 per person plus airfare to Managua, Nicaragua. This covers lodging, meals, in-country transportation, interpreter expenses, and trip coordination and leadership. Other personal costs during the trip include meals en route to and from Nicaragua, $10 entry visa, souvenirs, and any unscheduled activities/meals the team decides to add. If a minimum number of eight participants is not reached, the cost person may increase. We have limited space for this adventure.
Travel Arrangements
Participants book their own flights, either individually or as a group. Participants should arrive in Managua by 3pm on the first day of the trip.
