La Flor Clean Water Project

In 2009, the families of the isolated mountain top community of La Flor organized to change the dangerous health risks that come from toxic water.

They worked together with the project's founding partners to connect every family to the water system and add a chlorination process to clean the water from their only source, a nearby polluted river. The community leaders created a payment system that allows for repairs, and a schedule that includes every family in the cleaning and maintenance of the system. The community-based maintenace system makes the project completely self-sustaining.
