Green Stoves

Green Stoves are a small investment that makes a big difference! That’s why JustHope has built eleven green stoves in our partner communities since January 2018.

  1. SAFER BURNING = FEWER BURNS
  2. The typical rural Nicaraguan household heats their home and cooks their food using an open fire pit. While a fire pit may be fun to have in the backyard for roasting marshmallows, it is not safe to have an open fire indoors. A well-insulated Green Stove keeps women and children from being burned.

  3. BETTER AIR QUALITY = FEWER RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS
  4. Remember how much you coughed last time a gust of wind blew the smoke from the grill in your face? Now, imagine that inside your home. The chimney on a Green Store channels smoke outside, reducing asthma and other respiratory problems.

  5. LESS WOOD = MORE TREES
  6. According to the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, Nicaragua has lost half of its forestland over the last 40 years and Bosawás in central Nicaragua, the third largest forest reserve in the world, is shrinking. Yet, the average Nicaraguan family burns an entire small tree in less than two weeks. Green Stoves reduce the use of wood by 70%.

  7. LESS WOOD = SAVINGS
  8. Nicaraguan families using traditional wood-burning pits invest a good deal of money each week in buying wood to heat their homes and cook food. With less wood needed to power a Green Stove, they spend 70% less on these activities.
